The Unanswered Murder of Chaudhry Adnan: Failures of the State, the Police, and Those Who Should Fear Justice

By Mishal Zia | February 15, 2024

Three days ago, the assassination of Chaudhry Muhammad Adnan on February 12, 2024, in Rawalpindi has sent shockwaves through the nation. This was not a random act of violence. It was a brazen, calculated attack carried out in broad daylight near the Police Lines, a place supposedly secure and heavily monitored. The fact that gunmen could ride up on motorbikes and execute a former Member of the Punjab Assembly in front of dozens of witnesses exposes a terrifying truth about Pakistan: the powerful can act with impunity, and the state is either unable or unwilling to stop them.

Chaudhry Adnan was a respected political figure who had served his community and contested elections with integrity. Yet his prominence did not shield him from death. The attack raises serious questions about the government’s ability to protect its citizens. Security protocols, if they existed, failed spectacularly, leaving one of the country’s elected leaders vulnerable in a city supposedly under tight surveillance.

The Civil Lines police, assigned to investigate the case, have shown either incompetence or complicity. While suspects, including politically influential figures, were reportedly named in the FIR, progress has been agonizingly slow. Legal loopholes, bail grants under questionable circumstances, and delays in witness statements have only strengthened the perception that justice in Pakistan is reserved for the powerful. Those who would kill an elected representative in broad daylight are brazen because they know the system is on their side.

Reports of witnesses being intimidated or retracted statements are emerging. Key suspects have manipulated legal processes to their advantage. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens watch in horror, realizing that in Pakistan, influence and money often speak louder than law and justice. The police, instead of acting decisively, appear paralyzed, caught between public outrage and political pressure.

The government’s failure is equally glaring. Political interference, a lack of accountability, and a culture of protecting elites have created an environment where murders of high-profile figures can occur with little consequence. How can citizens expect safety when elected representatives themselves cannot move freely without fear of assassination?

Chaudhry Adnan’s murder is a horrifying reminder of the rot within Pakistan’s institutions. The police must stop acting as protectors of the powerful and start serving the people. The government must enforce accountability without favor. And those responsible for this cowardly act, politically connected or otherwise, must face justice swiftly and transparently.

The eyes of the nation are watching. Every day that passes without action is another day that emboldens the killers and weakens the state. If Pakistan truly values law, democracy, and justice, it must act now. The murder of Chaudhry Adnan cannot be another forgotten tragedy.
