Murder, conspiracy or an accidental death : The mysterious case of Volley ball player Chaudhry Mohsin Farooq
On a tragic night in 2019, the family of Chaudhry Mohsin Farooq received a phone call from an unidentified person claiming, "An incident has occurred. Mohsin Farooq has been injured, and all of his friends are dead."
The shocking call devastated the family. They rushed to the hospital, only to learn that Mohsin had died. Surprisingly, the same friends who had reportedly been described as dead later arrived at the hospital and claimed that Mohsin had died by suicide. However, Mohsin's uncle rejected this explanation and insisted that his nephew had been murdered. An FIR was subsequently registered against four of Mohsin's close friends.
Chaudhry Mohsin Farooq, a well-known volleyball player from Kallar Syedan, died under mysterious circumstances in Bahria Town, Islamabad. He was laid to rest in his native village of Sumbal Samoot, Kallar Syedan, where thousands of mourners attended his funeral. Despite the passage of time, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unresolved. Islamabad Police detained four of Mohsin's associates, all of whom were reportedly staying on the same floor of the building where the incident occurred.
According to investigators, Mohsin and his friends had rented two apartments in the housing society for one night. One apartment was on the third floor, while the other was on the fifth floor.
Police stated that Mohsin was upstairs while his friends remained on the lower floor.
According to one friend's statement:
"Late at night, we heard a loud noise. We went upstairs and discovered what had happened."
Police collected forensic evidence from the scene and obtained CCTV footage from the building. However, the circumstances surrounding the surveillance cameras raised further questions. According to the victim's cousin, the building normally had approximately 16 to 17 CCTV cameras. However, on the night of Mohsin's death, only one camera was reportedly operational. The family has questioned why the majority of the CCTV cameras were allegedly not functioning that night. It remains unclear whether investigators established the reason for the apparent failure of the surveillance system.
Investigators later discovered that Mohsin and his friends had been celebrating after he won a volleyball match. According to reports, four women attended the gathering. One of the women reportedly accompanied Mohsin to the fifth floor shortly before his death. However, she was no longer present when police arrived. Police reportedly sought to identify and locate this woman, believing her testimony could help establish the sequence of events. According to the victim's cousin Mujtaba, a woman believed to be connected to the case appeared in court only once. She was described as being in her mid-thirties and was never seen again. Several possibilities have been discussed by observers. Some believe she may have chosen not to participate further because of the social stigma often associated with women appearing in criminal investigations in Pakistan. Others have questioned whether she may have faced pressure to remain silent. However, no evidence has publicly confirmed either possibility.
Following the registration of the FIR, Mohsin's friends were taken into custody for questioning, and his body was sent for a post-mortem examination. Family members later stated that they observed multiple injuries on the body after it was returned from the morgue. According to sources, the body reportedly had stab wounds, and several fingers on one hand appeared to have been severed. It remains unclear whether these injuries resulted from the incident itself, medical procedures during the post-mortem examination, or a struggle before death. The post-mortem report reportedly detected traces of alcohol in Mohsin's body. However, his family strongly disputed this finding, maintaining that he did not consume alcohol.
Those named in the FIR included, Chaudhry Asad of Samoot, Kallar Syedan Shehzad from Azad Kashmir
Nasir Modi from Azad Kashmir, Majid Gujjar from Mohra Bhattian, Jabar Dadial, Azad Kashmir. Police initially investigated the case before reaching the conclusion that Mohsin's death was a suicide. His family has consistently rejected that conclusion.
The available CCTV footage reportedly shows Mohsin falling from the fifth floor onto his back, landing close to the building. Some observers have argued that if he had jumped voluntarily, they would have expected his body to land farther from the building and possibly in a different position. Others note that the dynamics of a fall depend on numerous factors, making it difficult to draw conclusions from the footage alone. Whether the CCTV footage supports or contradicts the official conclusion remains a matter of dispute.
One of the most puzzling aspects of the case remains the unidentified caller who informed Mohsin's family that both Mohsin and all of his friends had died. According to the victim's cousin, the friends were in fact alive. The identity of the caller and the reason for providing false information have never been publicly established.
Mohsin Farooq's funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed in Kallar Syedan. Thousands attended, with many people reportedly forced to park and walk nearly two kilometres because of the overwhelming crowd. A gifted volleyball player, Mohsin had earned widespread admiration throughout the region.
Family and friends remember that he often recited a favourite verse during gatherings:
"The pain of trusting someone became the reason for telling the world my story."
More than six years later, questions surrounding Mohsin Farooq's death continue to be raised by his family, who maintain that important aspects of the investigation remain unresolved. This mysterious case revolves around bribe, negligible of evidence, ignoring the facts and injustice. of The case remains one of the most debated unexplained deaths involving a prominent athlete from the region.
